Whew. After much work, I have upgraded every major piece of software bringing you this blog and gotten them all working and happy again. Postgres 7.3.1, PHP 4.3.0, and Apache 2.0.43 are now running the show, and after a couple of tweaks to the blog code, everything should be happy with the new version of Postgres.

University students in the UK have been complaining about so-called top-up fees because amazingly, the country's tax-funded education system wants more money. (Some students pay top-up fees as high as £1,100!)
As if that argument wasn't silly enough, the discussion has now gone from silly to just plain stupid. Charles Clarke, Education Secretary, has recently told BBC Radio 2 of his proposals for funding education by way of a graduate tax. That's right, if you go to school to improve the economic value of your labour, you're going to be financially penalised by the government, and as should be expected, the rate of taxation proposed is not a fixed amount based on the resources you consume while at university, but it is instead a graduated scheme to ensure that those who benefit the most from their education are penalised the greatest.
If you wanted a good way to discourage students from pursuing higher education so that they can be men of the mind instead of men of muscles, this is it.
