I was amused by this image and gave the link to some friends, whereupon one of them (who is not an Objectivist) remarked, `How objective.' How right he was!

According to a BBC story, campaigners for Compassion in World Farming, a UK group promoting humane treatment of animals, claims that not only do animals have emotions (probably right), but they are also moral beings (huh?). The story cites no specific evidence, but on the organisation's web site, they cite `facts' such as that bees and lions will altruistically sacrifice themselves for the hive or look after all of the young in their pride.

The mistake here, of course, is the a priori elevation of animals to rational beings since morality is not a choice for an entity lacking an advanced, conceptual, non-empiric consciousness. Does a bee really stop and think to weigh the value he would lose by allowing an invader to ransack the hive versus the value he loses by giving up his own life and stinging the attacker? Of course not; the reaction is merely a preprogrammed instinct, and attempting to put both entities who automatically embark on a path of self-destruction in the same category as those who can choose between that and an alternative is nothing but integration by nonessentials.
