IMC reel from safety row —
The Urbana Fire Department has closed the performance space of the local Indepedent Media Center! Citing numerous violations of building and fire codes (including a sprinkler system that had not been connected to the mains water and a lack of a certificate of occupancy specifying how many people may assemble in the space), Urbana Fire Chief Rex Mundt ordered the performance area closed immediately in light of the fact that performances were scheduled for the near future.
This whole story is really too ironic. Neo-communists such as the people who run the UCIMC have long championed the saddling of corporations and individuals with regulations and restrictions on their rights, but when the eye of the state turns to them, it is apparently supposed to look the other way.
(UCIMC have a web page, but I'm not going to link to it.)

PlanetSide soon! —
For any gamers out there, I should also point out that PlanetSide releases in one week, and will be in stores on the following day, 20 May. I've been in the beta for this game for about two weeks now, and it is really quite good. It is the first Massively Multiplayer Online First-Person Shooter (MMOFPS) ever produced, and it is indeed massive both in numbers of players and in areas in which to play. It lacks many of the RPG elements of games such as Dark Age of Camelot, but the PvP combat is much more fun than in DAoC because it is very fast paced, and there is almost always something going on.
