The scream heard round the world —

After much laughter and contemplation, it's time to break my tradition of not posting images to this page. See also the audio of Dr Dean. [Cartoon from Cox and Forkum].

Howard's Howl —

Dr Dean's speech has now been immortalised as `Howard's Howl' and the 'I Have a Scream' speech. I think his outburst will nullify any chances he had of obtaining the Democratic nomination because political issues are now irrelevant; now it's a matter of whether he's sane. My officemate has recently informed me that Dr Dean also has a history of panic attacks.

I'm not saying these are necessarily rational criteria, but I think that will cast enough doubt over him to remove him from the race since voters never forget any kind of transgression or strangeness about political candidates. As an example, although they may not remember when it happened, anyone from Texas knows the name Clayton Williams and will remember a certain joke which instantaneously ended his chances in a gubernatorial election.

Clayton Williams was the 1990 Texas GOP gubernatorial candidate. He was leading Democrat Ann Richards in the polls, but then he spoke the words that ultimately cost him the governor's race.

Talking to reporters about the weather, he joked that bad weather is like rape: `as long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it.' Williams' comments created a major firestorm. Nothing else he said throughout the rest of the campaign mattered.

His attempts to apologise were fruitless. The remark stuck to him like glue and cost him the election to Richards.

For crying out loud, I was 11 when this happened and even I remember it.
