English v French —

A little while ago, I was perusing a pamphlet I received via post from the CBC:

CBC/Radio-Canada is a public radio and television broadcaster charged with informing, enlightening, and entertaining Canadians, while promoting Canada's English and French cultural heritage across the country.

Hmm, I thought, that's interesting that they put the word `English' before `French.' That must be quite the controversy in Canada! I flipped the pamphlet over:

CBC/Radio-Canada est un réseau public de radio et de télévision qui a pour mission de renseigner, éclairer et divertir tout en faisant rayonner les cultures francophone et anglophone partout au pays.

And there we have the solution.

Journalia —

Let me go rapid-fire down a bunch of CNN links I've got queued.

A judge is reported by his reporter et aliae to have taken a fancy to masturbating on the bench. Yeehaw.

A few people are whining about the cost of going to hospital when one hasn't health insurance.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Hospitals routinely charge uninsured people up to four times as much than patients with coverage, financial experts have told lawmakers.

In other words, from this sentence, we can determine that at least one hospital routinely charges the uninsured the same amount as insured patients, and at least one other hospital routinely charges them four times as much. Now that we have information about two of our nation's hospitals, it will be very exciting to see CNN reveal information about the rest of them. Yawn.

In case anyone is thinking of responding to the tune of `You will care more about health care costs when you live in a van under a bridge,' let me give just one data point even though such a non-argument doesn't deserve any serious answer because it happens that I have some personal experience in this area. I've sought medical care when uninsured. I got charged LESS than the standard rate. Yawn.

(We know, of course, from Health Care is Not a Right the reason why health care costs are out of control.)

And finally, as I type, CNN show a quite impressively non-objective headline on their front page.

Schwarzenegger: State's stray animals should die sooner

And the story:

Schwarzenegger backs speedier killing of strays

SACRAMENTO, California (AP) -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wants to repeal a state law that requires animal shelters to hold stray dogs and cats for up to six days before killing them.

Because he wants the cute kittens dead NOW NOW NOW. Were Mr Davis still in office, I'm sure we would have seen something more like

Davis: Relieve animal shelter overcrowding through faster euthanasia

Davis supports reducing animal shelter rolls to improve humaneness

SACRAMENTO, California (AP) -- Gov. Gray Davis wants to amend animal shelter policy to allow faster euthanasia for animals so that animals which are kept enjoy more humane conditions.

Boogaloopers! —

Back in the day, one of the hot shareware games to play on the Mac in the ACM office was called Boogaloopers. You drew loops around bad guys to kill them, but if you drew too quickly, your string broke, etc. It was a classic game in its simplicity and greatness, but I figured it had fallen by the wayside with the demise of OS 9.

Imagine my surprise when I learnt that not only was there a PC version of Boogaloopers, but that one can also still buy it! For only $10, it is an easy choice.
