Internet vouchers —

On the heels of much talk on HBL about why school vouchers would be worse than our present socialised schools, CNN report that the government of Philadelphia are considering giving free wireless Internet access to all takers.

Since the government are almost certainly planning on subsidising this endeavour with tax revenue, they will be able to compete on price with commercial ISPs, and at least in terms of price, they can win since they can extract part of the cost of such a service by force from taxpayers. What happens when the government ISP gains enough customers to have a significant amount of market share? My guess is an Internet-era FCC.

The unreason involved in such a proposal is so preposterous (what's next, government-issued food?) that I'm going to stop here.
