Introducing DVD-A and Guitar Noir

I think I can now comment on the DVD-A format, and I am pleased to report that I am in favour of the DVD-A format over that of CD. Even on my modest system, I can hear quite a difference, most noticeably in the highs and in terms of detail. It's like the percussion and strings are right in the room with you. Unfortunately, my system can't yet take advantage of the multi-channel recordings, but DVD-A sounds great even only in stereo.

If you want to play a DVD-A, the easiest thing to do is to buy a DVD-A player such as my NAD T533, but many DVD (i.e. DVD-V) players will play some or all of a DVD-A, as the differences between the two formats is minimal. Basically, the media, filesystem, and everything else about DVD-V and DVD-A are the same, the only differences are that DVD-A includes some additional audio compression methods and higher resolution audio. Also, thanks to the greater capacity of DVD media, DVD-As can include multiple audio formats and mixes (such as a stage mix and an audience mix, depending on where you want to sit in the concert hall).

One of the more interesting labels is AIX Records. AIX attempt to cater to both audiophiles as well as mere mortals. To this end, all of their DVD-As are double-sided: the blue side is playable in a DVD-V player, whereas some or all of the material on the red side requires a DVD-A player.

Album: Laurence Juber's Guitar Noir
Label: AIX Records
Mixes: [red side] 96/24/5.1/MLP (stage)
[blue side] 96/24/2/PCM, 5.1/DD (audience), 5.1/DTS (stage)
Extras: session and rehearal videos, guitar lesson, biographies, photos gallery
Price: $25

I can't really call myself an aficionado of acoustic guitar music, but I like some of it occasionally. I chose to buy this disc after listening to one of its tracks on the DVD-A sample disc I got with an Audigy sound card. I like it very much, and it will really show you how high-resolution audio formats and quality production can make your system shine. The sense of physical presence of the Mr Juber's guitar as well as the accompanying percussion is quite incredible, and he demonstrates a superb skill in playing both delicate as well as more aggressive material.
