The return to slavery To the editor: Regarding the proposed bill to mandate military training for men as reported in Wednesday's Daily Illini, I find it hard to believe such a practice would even be discussed in this country. What U.S. Rep. Bob Stump, R-Ariz., proposes is outright slavery. He claims, in essence, that I do not own my own life, that the government may reappropriate any amount of it at its whim to teach me an amalgamation of useless skills because he thinks he knows how I should live my life and what I should learn better than I do. Of what use is being yelled at and being treated as less than human to a computer scientist? Blank out. If Stump were interested in "teaching discipline" and "learning to be on your own," he would abort this festering breach of my rights so I would be free to go to college, learn skills which I will actually employ in my life and get a productive job. In fact, he is not interested in that; he only mouths the words while plotting to tear down my achievements before the seeds have even been sown.
